Rebuilding Momentum: Getting This Defender 130 Back on Track
Some builds start in our shop. Others arrive after years of frustration.
This 1996 Land Rover Defender 130 came to RTRI Offroad after spending more than two years stuck in “paint jail,” that place projects go when progress stops, timelines disappear, and owners start wondering if they’ll ever see their vehicle finished.
Originally started by another shop in 2020, this build had stalled hard. Parts had gone missing. Work had been left unfinished. The owner had lost confidence in the process and, frankly, excitement for the truck itself.
When it arrived at RTRI, our job wasn’t just to continue the build. It was to rebuild momentum.
Starting Over to Do It Right
As we dug into the project, it quickly became clear that moving forward would mean starting over in a lot of areas.
We tore down the truck, corrected drivetrain issues, rebuilt the front and rear axles, and worked through the long list of missing hardware, brackets, and components that had disappeared over the course of the build.
In many cases, replacement parts simply didn’t exist—so we made them.
Roughly 70% of the brackets that mount the body to the chassis on this truck have been designed and fabricated in-house by RTRI. They look factory because that was the goal, but every one of them was engineered and built specifically for this Defender.
Built to Perform as Good as It Looks
Under the hood sits a crate LS3, installed by the team at Post Performance, paired with a Holley Terminator ECU and backed by a 4L80E transmission with stock transfer case. We’re expecting this truck to land around 450 horsepower when complete.
While rebuilding the axles, we also upgraded the truck with a four-wheel big brake system to match the performance of the drivetrain.
To support the caliber of the rest of the build, the exhaust system couldn’t be off-the-shelf.
Dynamic Driven Fabrication built a fully custom stainless system specifically for this truck, featuring:
- Hand-built custom headers
- Stainless Bros tubing and hardware throughout
- G-Sport high-flow catalytic converters
- 2.5" merge into 3.5" rear exit
- Stainless Bros muffler
Builds at this level demand precise attention to detail, so every piece was fabricated for this exact Defender.
Modern Capability Meets Classic Defender Character
While correcting the foundation of the build, we also modernized nearly every system in the truck.
This Defender is being upgraded with:
- Vintage Air HVAC system for modern climate control
- American Autowire Severe Duty full wiring harness
- Power windows and power locks
- JL Audio premium sound system
- Puma dash conversion for a more refined, modern interior
The interior plans evolved, too.
Originally spec’d with a tan leather interior, the owner decided to go bolder, switching to a custom orange leather upholstery package that will make this truck impossible to ignore.
Cato's Custom Upholstery is currently bringing that vision to life.
Back on Track
After a year in our shop, this Defender finally has what it lacked before: a clear path to the finish line.
The customer is excited about the project again. Progress is consistent. And after years of setbacks, this truck is finally moving toward completion the right way.
Once final assembly is complete, it’ll head into Santorini Black paint before receiving its final finishing touches.
Special thanks to Thomas at Legends Global Parts for helping source many of the hard-to-find components needed to bring this build back together.
Some projects need more than parts. They need someone willing to step in, solve problems, and get them finished properly. This is one of those builds.
